Emergency light inspection checklist

Battery emergency lights and exit signs need a short test every month and a long one every year, with a written record. Here is the list, and a log sheet to print.

Monthly 30-second test

  1. Test button held 30 seconds: all lamps stay on
  2. Heads aimed at the exit path
  3. Charging / power indicator on
  4. Exit sign letters lit and readable
  5. No physical damage, unit secure on the wall
  6. Nothing blocks the light or the sign

How often to test emergency lighting

NFPA 101 asks for a functional test of battery-powered emergency lighting every month, for at least 30 seconds, and an annual test for 1.5 hours (90 minutes). Written records of the tests are to be kept for the authority having jurisdiction. Self-testing and self-diagnostic units run the tests themselves, but still need a visual check and a record.

How to run the monthly test

  • Press and hold the test button (or switch off the circuit) for 30 seconds.
  • Watch every lamp stay lit for the whole time.
  • Check the exit sign is lit and readable from the path.
  • Note any unit that failed and have it repaired.

How long is the monthly emergency light test?

At least 30 seconds under NFPA 101. The annual test runs for 90 minutes.

Do exit signs need to be tested too?

Yes, battery-backed exit signs are tested with the emergency lights, on the same schedule.
